Suspends Delhi-Newark Direct For
Two Weeks
United has cancelled
its Newark (EWR)-Delhi nonstop for next two weeks from Friday. The airline sent
messages to customers about the cancellation, which has been caused due to
closure of Pakistan airspace that is forcing aircraft to take a much longer route
since end of February. In a statement on its website, United said: “Due to
seasonal winds and the continued closure of Pakistani airspace, we’re currently
unable to operate our flights between New York/Newark (EWR) and New Delhi (DEL)
while meeting crew flying time requirements. Beginning April 5, in order to
minimize the inconveniences for our customers, we will suspend the service for
two weeks but will continue to closely monitor this situation and remain in
contact with US government authorities and our international partners. We’re
also reaching out directly to our customers booked on these flights to provide
alternative travel options, including rebooking on other airlines or offering
full refunds. We will continue to operate our nonstop flights from New
York/Newark to Mumbai (BOM).” Air India and United are the only two airlines
with direct flights between India and US. Since the closure of the Pakistan
airspace, flights between south and southeast Asia, including, Delhi and the
west have been badly affected.
Air India has rerouted its nonstop between Delhi and the US till April 30, 2019. Its Delhi-New York (JFK) and Delhi-Chicago flights take a technical halt at Vienna where the aircraft gets refueled and a change of crew. Due to additional crew requirement, AI has clubbed its Mumbai-New York (JFK) with Mumbai-Newark (EWR) nonstop from March 16 to May 31, 2019. The longer routing is costing airlines dear. AI is spending crores more on each flight between Delhi and the East Coast due to extra fuel burn, crew requirement and technical stop mid-way for refueling. “Maybe it is simply too much for airlines to spend the extra amount and route rationalization at times like this happens,” said an AI pilot. Both AI and United are Star Alliance members and can accommodate each other’s passengers.
