350-tonne temple moves for Madurai-Natham

elevated highway

After three months of ground work, the shifting of mathaiamman temple at narayanapuram on new natham road began on friday with the structure being lifted 5 feet off the ground. The 21-year-old structure weighing 350 tonnes will be moved 25 feet away by saturday to save it from demolition for the upcoming madurai-natham elevated highway project. Hundreds watched the spectacle as a team of 30 labourers from haryana, nepal and bihar tirelessly worked to move the structure each millimetre. Hundreds of fully-grown trees were already axed on the route giving a clear indication that the temple will not be spared. Temple priest a damodharan told toi that the authorities wanted 15 feet of the temple to be brought down. “committee members suggested demolition and reconstruction but the estimated cost came to rs 1.2 crore, which was twice the cost incurred in construction,” he said and added that it was then that they came to know about the option to lift and shift the temple. The committee members visited a house at ellis nagar that was lifted about 5 feet off the ground and another building which was shifted to vagaikulam though they were considerably smaller. With engineering support from a anbil tharmalingam and technical support from a haryana-based firm specializing in shifting buildings, they decided to move the temple.

Tharmalingam said the structure had a built-up area of 4,225 sq.ft, was 12 feet high till the roof and about 25 feet high including the tower. With meticulous planning, work began to first lift the structure and make arrangements to lay the basement for the place where it would be shifted, which would cost around rs 22 lakh. As many as 350 vertical jockeys were used for every one to two feet and 77 to prevent the roof from arching or collapsing when the base was lifted. Shifting began at 10.30 am and it took 3 hours to move the structure manually by 3 feet. Though it was required to be moved only 15 feet, the temple authorities said they were taking it 25 feet away to prevent a similar situation if highways department wanted more space for future widening works. After the main temple structure is shifted, the team will begin shifting the three sub-temples with a built-up area of 42 to 45 sq.ft. Each about 15 feet away. After shifting, the filling of the base and final touches will be completed in three weeks
